Based on the novel by Mihail Sadoveanu, Baltagul is a Romanian film set in the 1930s. The protagonist boy finds himself in the adult world and must try to find his place with help from an old woman who tells him her fairytales. Additionally, the film follows women's stories of love and marriage, which leads to betrayal and tragedy. All in all, this film follows the narrative of Romania at that time--the final days of great dynasty and social groups among peasantry and aristocracy breaking down in rebellion against new order (communism) during end of 19th century. The film starred the Romanian actors Gabriel Anghelescu and Marisela Bălan. It was directed by Cristian Mungiu, who won Best Director's award at Cannes Film Festival in 2006 for his first feature film "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days". The film opens with a scene showing an empty stall in a Bucharest market as the camera pans across it. The camera then follows the Weeping Boy as he wanders around Bucharest and visits old women's homes to ask them for food and shelter. He is repeatedly turned away, until he comes across an old woman named Aurora (Bălan). The Weeping Boy and Aurora exchange a few words and Aurora gives him some food and goes inside. He then leaves. The film then jumps to 12 years earlier, under World War I. As Romania begins to be taken over by the Central Powers, the Weeping Boy's father, Milic (Anghelescu), boards a train with his five-year-old son to go to Bessarabia where he will fight for the Romanian Army as an officer. When Milic realizes that his son is fond of reading fairytales, he tells him that there is no such thing as fairytales and that stories like those never happen in real life. After the war, Milic begins working as a schoolteacher. He is not very successful at it and has to take second jobs such as digging ditches and serving at a brothel. The Weeping Boy grows up with his mother (Bălan) and brother, Camelia (Surdulescu) under Milic's care. Camelia is continuously bullied by the other children because of her mother's work, and she is often left with her sickly father so Milic can finish work early. Milic marries a woman named Ana (Bălan) and moves into her house, but is still unhappy and wants to leave. An arsonist sets fire to Milic's house and his family barely escapes with their lives. As Milic recovers from the fire, he vows to give up his old ways of being a schoolteacher. When Milic is not working, he spends time with the Weeping Boy who reads old books at his home. In one scene they discuss fairytales and Milic tells the boy that "things cannot happen the way you read them in books". cfa1e77820
